With lockdowns in place for a good part of the 2020 and 2021 (so far) we now embrace a virtual social life with zoom meetings, working form home, heat at home meals from your favourite restaurant with a bottle of wine and a zoom quiz with your closest friends and family is now the “new night in” and only leaving the house for our essential daily exercise. Loungewear, messy buns, a slicked back pony or headband (working through the 3rd day of dry shampoo) and minimal makeup have now become our “new normal”.
Has it got you thinking, How often should I be washing my hair?
Washing your hair too often can be drying and damaging for your scalp and hair. Particularly for longer hair lengths, for shorter hair, it is not as bad as the hair is more virginal.
Overall washing your hair too often can strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils. If you are an enthusiastic daily hair washer you may find your hair lengths may start to become dryer and brittle other signs of over washing include the colour of your hair will begin to fade, frizziness and a flakey scalp.
Many factors contribute to how often you should wash your hair along with your hair type. As a general rule, we recommend washing your hair every 2-3 days.
For coloured, over-processed, brittle hair we recommend 1-2 times per week using a shampoo containing a high protein content to strengthen and repair the hair. Also, try to use as little heat as possible on the hair between washes.
Dry hair should be washed a maximum of twice a week using a shampoo containing a high content of moisture to help hydrate and repair dry hair.
Straight & Fine hair - needs to be washed more
Curly hair tends to be on the dry side so you can go longer without washing. For curly hair, we recommend using a co-wash. A co-wash is a cleansing conditioner that conditions and gently cleanses in one step, it removes build-up, hydrates curly hair and reduces frizz. You can also use a deep cleaning rinse to remove excess product built up and excess oil whenever you need a clean slate
Oily hair we recommend washing every 1-2 days using a sulphate free cleansing shampoo with no conditioning agents silicones or oils. If you are using a shampoo with added conditioning agents, silicones and oils this will contribute to the excess oils you already suffering from.
Our top tips-
Break the cycle
If you are a daily shampooer try replacing your shampoo for a simple rinsing with water between washes. This will remove most visible dirt and debris without stripping your hair of any moisture. You can even apply a small amount of conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends if your hair for added hydration if your hair is dry or brittle, rinse thoroughly and style as normal.
Dry shampoo
Dry shampoo is a fantastic product to refresh your hair between washes. Not only will it help absorb excess oils it will also give you extra body and bounce. Top tip: Hold the can 20-30cm from the hair and spray evenly into the root area of your hair, leave for 2 minutes then brush and style as you wish.
Double Shampoo
We recommend double shampooing (cleanse twice) your hair when washing. The first shampoo will break the surface tension and lightly cleanse your hair and scalp. You will find the first shampoo will often have less lather (foam). The second shampoo will lather well and work more effectively to remove all of the oils, styling products, dirt and pollution.
Sulphate free Shampoo
We recommend using a sulphate free shampoo as it doesn’t contain harsh chemical detergents like sulphates to create a lather. Sulphate free shampoos are fantastic for colour treated hair as they will not strip the colour and moisture from your hair and far more gentle on that hair and scalp.
Cool Rinse
A cool rinse is a perfect way to smooth down the cuticle layer on the hair resulting in healthier shinier hair.
Swap conditioner to a hair mask
If you suffer from extremely dry, over-processed, brittle or stressed hair, we suggest swapping out your conditioner and use a hair mask instead. Leaving a mask on for 3-5 minutes to add as much intense moisture and repair as much as possible.
